Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) has offered exciting new promotions during the holy month of Ramadan for its broadband subscribers.
Realizing its position as a socially responsible company and contributing towards building the human resource for development and prosperity of the country, PTCL will sponsor millions of rupees towards the educational expenses of its customers applying for PTCL broadband connection during the month of Ramadan. 50 lucky winners selected through a transparent process of lucky draw after the end of Ramadan will be given educational assistance worth Rs 100,000 each. This offer would be applicable for all new PTCL broadband student package subscribers.
Moreover to further develop professionals in various professional fields in Pakistan, PTCL is providing convenient online educational courses such as project management, setting up of home businesses, computer and IT courses to anyone applying for a PTCL broadband connection during the month of Ramadan. During the month of Ramadan new applicants for PTCL Broadband service can apply for a FREE Internationally recognized easy learning card that has an actual worth of Rs. 4000. This easy learning card will provide them with an opportunity to acquire an internationally recognized ‘online’ certified qualification to help further their careers in the international market as well.
SEVP Commercial Naveed Saeed said these initiatives would enforce PTCL’s image as a socially responsible organization contributing towards the educational sector of Pakistan. It has been PTCL’s objective to provision its broadband service in every corner of the country, and now providing significant educational assistance to its broadband subscribers, would strengthen the bond between PTCL and its loyal customers.

While the current flood has caused large-scale human misery it also affected cellular sites infrastructure resulting in inadequacy of telecommunication services in the affected areas.
Though the cellular companies claim that they are restoring their network, there are still many sites yet to be made functional primarily because the areas are inaccessible.
According to an official of Zong, it is difficult to determine the exact count of affected installations because of the accessibility issue in the flood-ridden areas. “The reported loss is around Rs120 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The loss may be more than double once we’ll be able to visit more sites in Punjab and some parts of Sindh.”
He said the partially affected areas due to flood were: Nowshera, Charsadda, Swat, Kalam, D.I. Khan, Mianwali, Skardu, Hunza, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Mahmoodkot, Rajanpur, Salehpat Road, Ghouspur and Thal.
A Telenor spokesperson said the floods had caused damage to its 690 sites, however, more than 80 per cent had been restored by now. “We are working to restore the remaining sites. Restoration work is being delayed due to access issues caused by damage to roads and bridges. Continued rains are also hampering the restoration process. Other factors contributing to the delay include fuel shortage, power outages, damage to long-haul fiber link and flooding of sites in certain areas.”
An official of Ufone said its 60 sites affected in the flooded areas. A Warid spokesman said its infrastructure had been affected in the flood areas but some sites in Charsadda, Nowshera, Dir and Swat were still not restored owing to accessibility and other issues.

PTCL workers’ strike leaves over 10,000 phones useless:
More than 10,000 telephone lines remain dead in the Islamabad and Rawalpindi region as a strike by PTCL employees against the management for not increasing their salaries in accordance with the government decision entered fourth day.
Due to the strike, work at almost all the 15 major exchanges in the region remains at a standstill and the complaints are not being addressed, he added.
Sources in the PTCL said 70,000 to 80,000 telephone lines were out of order in the country that included around 30,000 in Karachi, 5,000 in rest of Sindh; 20,000 in Lahore, 10,000 in northern Punjab, 10,000 in southern Punjab and some 3,000 in Balochistan.
The PTCL system has been severely damaged in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to floods but the rehabilitation works has not started there due to various reasons, including workers’ strike.

Net subscribers’ growth in the cellular segment crossed one-million-mark in June after a gap of one year, indicating the sterilisation process to churn out inactive subscribers is coming to an end, it said.
Mobilink remains the largest cellular companies with 32 percent market share and Telenor was the fastest growing player as it gained two percentage points market share to 24 percent, according to the data.
Mobilink, the market leader of the cellular sector, was also star performer as it attracted the highest number of subscribers on the network. It added 3.065 million customers to widen its base to 32.2 million by June 2010, it said.
The biggest cellular operator was successful to recover its lost user base as its had contracted nearly 2.89 million in the financial year 2009.
A population of 2.37 million people will be benefitting from these projects in total which resides in the districts of Sanghar, Tharparkar Umerkot, Mirpur, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Bolan, Jaffarabad, Jhal Magsi and Nasirabad.
Since commercial power has not reached most of the areas where USF is running rural telecom projects, it proves to be a barrier to provide smooth uninterrupted telecom service. Even where commercial power infrastructure is available, the availability of power is extremely limited. Therefore, it was decided that operators will bid for all future infrastructure in un-served areas with renewable energy solutions.
This decision has played an important role in reducing the energy costs and is also a small contribution towards dealing with the energy crisis in Pakistan. Moreover, this initiative will also help in reducing carbon content in the atmosphere.
